I’ll share my secret sauce, which includes some fancy gear, a dash of sarcasm, and a whole lot of learning from my epic fails. Takeaways:

  • So, you want to do a call-in show but are not in the same room? Good luck with that. It's a whole circus act, but it's totally doable!
  • You'd better invest in some decent gear because mixing audio for a remote call-in show is like trying to juggle flaming torches while blindfolded.
  • If you think your audience will call in with questions, surprise! They're more likely to just drop comments in the chat and run with it.
  • Live streaming is a wild ride. One minute, you're answering questions, the next, you're kicking out pranksters like it's a reality TV show.

Speaker A

How do I do a call in show with myself and a co host who aren't in the same room?

Speaker B

Welcome to youo Podcast Consultant.

Speaker B

Small lessons with big value.

Speaker B

With more than a decade of experience and millions of downloads, this hall of fame podcaster is a featured speaker, author, and mentor to thousands.

Speaker B

Now he wants to work with you.

Speaker B

He's your podcast consultant.

Speaker B

Dave Jackson.

Speaker A

When I grew up, before there were 8 million channels on TV, there was a guy named Phil Donahue.

Speaker A

And he was kind of the precursor to Oprah.

Speaker A

And he would have these people on and Phil would almost lecture them.

Speaker A

He'd have this thing and he'd be talking about them and this is in the tower and that person's gonna do that and what are you gonna do with the da da da da?

Speaker A

It was a really interesting show, but he would take callers, so he'd probably have some earpiece or something.

Speaker A

And his producer is like, hey, we've got a caller.

Speaker A

And he would go, is the caller there?

Speaker A

And then you'd hear, yeah, Phil, I need to talk, right?

Speaker A

So I always wanted to be Phil Donahue.

Speaker A

And I do a show every Saturday.

Speaker A

If you ever want free podcast consulting, just get up at 10:30 in the morning.

Speaker A

Hopefully you're up by then on a Saturday, go to ask the podcast coach.com live.

Speaker A

And I had the dream of having myself.

Speaker A

I have a co host who lives in another state, and I wanted to be able to go, is the caller there?

Speaker A

And to make a long story short, it was just a pain in the butt because I had to have one mix because you end up with these echoes.

Speaker A

So I had to have one mix of myself and my co host go to the caller.

Speaker A

I had another mix of myself and the caller go to my co host.

Speaker A

And I had to.

Speaker A

You get the idea.

Speaker A

And so the other thing I noticed, and I went out and bought this giant mixing board.

Speaker A

I used a thing called Call In Studio, which is still around.

Speaker A

And the way that works is in theory, you have somebody screening your calls.

Speaker A

But I didn't.

Speaker A

And to make a long story short, I was streaming live to YouTube and a lot of people would just put their question in the chat.

Speaker A

And so I made a jingle that had our number.

Speaker A

And a lot of people would put their question in the chat and then I would have.

Speaker A

Then I put the number on the screen all the time.

Speaker A

And a lot of my audience put their questions in the chat because it was just easier.

Speaker A

And so I ditched it.

Speaker A

And what I use now to do my live show is I have A interface recorder mixer that's designed for people that want to stream live, called the Rodecaster Duo.

Speaker A

It is not cheap.

Speaker A

It is $500, but it has the ability to have two microphones plugged into it.

Speaker A

Plus you can plug it into your computer.

Speaker A

So I'm getting my co host and you have all sorts of fun things.

Speaker A

So I can do fun little noises like this right in my.

Speaker A

Like.

Speaker A

I basically start off every Saturday and I say ask the podcast coach for whatever the date is.

Speaker A

And then I play this.

Speaker A

Let's get ready to podcast.

Speaker A

And then I turn the volume down live as I'm doing this.

Speaker A

So I'm mixing live as I'm talking.

Speaker A

So it's a whole.

Speaker A

Live is a different skill set.

Speaker A

It's a completely different skill set.

Speaker A

I do invite my audience to come on.

Speaker A

They can jump into the video and I get maybe if I'm lucky, two a month, many times, zero times a month.

Speaker A

But my audience puts it in on the chat.

Speaker A

Now for streaming live and there are many options for this.

Speaker A

I use ECAMM Live and that is Mac only.

Speaker A

It's a great piece of software.

Speaker A

There is a bit of a learning curve when you first sign up, but you can make it look amazing.

Speaker A

And then if you're like, I don't have a Mac, there is a program called EVMux.

Speaker A

It's the weirdest name ever, but I've used it a few times just to test it out and it seemed to work as well and just send people to the chat.

Speaker A

And what's great is both those programs, when somebody sends you a question or a comment, they're just commenting in the live video.

Speaker A

You can click on the comment and it will put it up on the screen.

Speaker A

Now, eCamm, if we're going month to month, is starts at $20 a month and goes up to $40 a month.

Speaker A

And eVmux starts at $25 a month and goes up to 49.

Speaker A

Those are monthly pricing.

Speaker A

You can get cheaper pricing if you order a year in advance.

Speaker A

Keep in mind, for this show to work, I have to have people show up.

Speaker A

Now, I've been doing my show for over 10 years, but when I first showed up, I would prepare a whole show because I always assumed nobody was going to show up and nobody was going to ask a question.

Speaker A

And it is a completely different skill set because if you are letting people on, like I actually have a link where people can join the video.

Speaker A

It could be somebody looking to prank me.

Speaker A

And that's happened a time or two, not a lot But, Donna, maybe once a year somebody will come in and one guy just came in and hit a bong and blew a bunch of smoke into the screen.

Speaker A

You know, I did have somebody do some nudity that I had to cut out.

Speaker A

So it's, you know, there's always those pranksters if you don't have somebody screening your call.

Speaker A

And I think ev mooks, you can do that.

Speaker A

It's kind of tricky again, when you're doing live.

Speaker A

Plus, as you think about this, when you're screening your call, you kind of need somebody to do that for you because, well, you're busy doing the show.

Speaker A

So it is a different skill set.

Speaker A

And in the event you let somebody on live with you, you have to be ready to just kick them out or just interrupt them and go, hey, thanks so much for coming in.

Speaker A

Thanks for the question.

Speaker A

And then, boom, you're gone.

Speaker A

And this there's a great book called Beyond Powerful Radio.

Speaker A

Valerie Geller talks about this because some people just want to get on and then never want to get off.

Speaker A

And so they'll be like, ah, the quarterback is hack.

Speaker A

We should have never got him.

Speaker A

And then you ask him another question.

Speaker A

They're like, ah, that guy is no good.

Speaker A

And you're like, okay, that guy has one point.

Speaker A

He's made his point.

Speaker A

It's time to get him off the show.

Speaker A

So it's kind of expensive.

Speaker A

It's a whole other learning curve.

Speaker A

It is a lot of fun.

Speaker A

That's the.

Speaker A

What's the positive side of doing a live show?

Speaker A

Is the fact that I can get instant feedback.

Speaker A

Now, I'm lucky enough, I get about 30 people showing up live, so that's a full classroom.

Speaker A

And if I want to ask them a question, I can get instant feedback.

Speaker A

So it is a lot of fun once you do it long enough.

Speaker A

And you have to promote all the time.

Speaker A

You heard me today.

Speaker A

Every Saturday, 10:30.

Speaker A

Noticed I had an easy to get to link askthepodcastcoach.com live and it takes a while.

Speaker A

So it's a lot of work like everything else.

Speaker A

But if you put the time in, it can be a lot of fun.

Speaker A

But that's how I do ask the podcast coach every Saturday.

Speaker A

So thanks for the question.

Speaker A

And if you're thinking, Dave, I live in a different part of the world or whatever, I can't get up at 10:30 in the morning to check out your show.

Speaker A

Just go over to podcastconsultant.com voicemail and you can leave your question there.

Speaker A

I'll answer it here.

Speaker A

And I'LL probably use it on Ask the Podcast Coach, because if you're new to the show, I've been helping podcasters for 20 years.
