Takeaways:
- So, you want to do a call-in show but are not in the same room? Good luck with that. It's a whole circus act, but it's totally doable!
- You'd better invest in some decent gear because mixing audio for a remote call-in show is like trying to juggle flaming torches while blindfolded.
- If you think your audience will call in with questions, surprise! They're more likely to just drop comments in the chat and run with it.
- Live streaming is a wild ride. One minute, you're answering questions, the next, you're kicking out pranksters like it's a reality TV show.

How do I do a call in show with myself and a co host who aren't in the same room?

Speaker BWith more than a decade of experience and millions of downloads, this hall of fame podcaster is a featured speaker, author, and mentor to thousands.
Speaker BNow he wants to work with you.
Speaker BHe's your podcast consultant.
Speaker BDave Jackson.
Speaker AWhen I grew up, before there were 8 million channels on TV, there was a guy named Phil Donahue.
Speaker AAnd he was kind of the precursor to Oprah.
Speaker AAnd he would have these people on and Phil would almost lecture them.
Speaker AHe'd have this thing and he'd be talking about them and this is in the tower and that person's gonna do that and what are you gonna do with the da da da da?
Speaker AIt was a really interesting show, but he would take callers, so he'd probably have some earpiece or something.
Speaker AAnd his producer is like, hey, we've got a caller.
Speaker AAnd he would go, is the caller there?
Speaker AAnd then you'd hear, yeah, Phil, I need to talk, right?
Speaker ASo I always wanted to be Phil Donahue.
Speaker AAnd I do a show every Saturday.
Speaker AIf you ever want free podcast consulting, just get up at 10:30 in the morning.
Speaker AHopefully you're up by then on a Saturday, go to ask the podcast coach.com live.
Speaker AAnd I had the dream of having myself.
Speaker AI have a co host who lives in another state, and I wanted to be able to go, is the caller there?
Speaker AAnd to make a long story short, it was just a pain in the butt because I had to have one mix because you end up with these echoes.
Speaker ASo I had to have one mix of myself and my co host go to the caller.
Speaker AI had another mix of myself and the caller go to my co host.
Speaker AAnd I had to.
Speaker AYou get the idea.
Speaker AAnd so the other thing I noticed, and I went out and bought this giant mixing board.
Speaker AI used a thing called Call In Studio, which is still around.
Speaker AAnd the way that works is in theory, you have somebody screening your calls.
Speaker ABut I didn't.
Speaker AAnd to make a long story short, I was streaming live to YouTube and a lot of people would just put their question in the chat.
Speaker AAnd so I made a jingle that had our number.
Speaker AAnd a lot of people would put their question in the chat and then I would have.
Speaker AThen I put the number on the screen all the time.
Speaker AAnd a lot of my audience put their questions in the chat because it was just easier.
Speaker AAnd so I ditched it.
Speaker AAnd what I use now to do my live show is I have A interface recorder mixer that's designed for people that want to stream live, called the Rodecaster Duo.
Speaker AIt is not cheap.
Speaker AIt is $500, but it has the ability to have two microphones plugged into it.
Speaker APlus you can plug it into your computer.
Speaker ASo I'm getting my co host and you have all sorts of fun things.
Speaker ASo I can do fun little noises like this right in my.
Speaker ALike.
Speaker AI basically start off every Saturday and I say ask the podcast coach for whatever the date is.
Speaker AAnd then I play this.
Speaker ALet's get ready to podcast.
Speaker AAnd then I turn the volume down live as I'm doing this.
Speaker ASo I'm mixing live as I'm talking.
Speaker ASo it's a whole.
Speaker ALive is a different skill set.
Speaker AIt's a completely different skill set.
Speaker AI do invite my audience to come on.
Speaker AThey can jump into the video and I get maybe if I'm lucky, two a month, many times, zero times a month.
Speaker ABut my audience puts it in on the chat.
Speaker ANow for streaming live and there are many options for this.
Speaker AI use ECAMM Live and that is Mac only.
Speaker AIt's a great piece of software.
Speaker AThere is a bit of a learning curve when you first sign up, but you can make it look amazing.
Speaker AAnd then if you're like, I don't have a Mac, there is a program called EVMux.
Speaker AIt's the weirdest name ever, but I've used it a few times just to test it out and it seemed to work as well and just send people to the chat.
Speaker AAnd what's great is both those programs, when somebody sends you a question or a comment, they're just commenting in the live video.
Speaker AYou can click on the comment and it will put it up on the screen.
Speaker ANow, eCamm, if we're going month to month, is starts at $20 a month and goes up to $40 a month.
Speaker AAnd eVmux starts at $25 a month and goes up to 49.
Speaker AThose are monthly pricing.
Speaker AYou can get cheaper pricing if you order a year in advance.
Speaker AKeep in mind, for this show to work, I have to have people show up.
Speaker ANow, I've been doing my show for over 10 years, but when I first showed up, I would prepare a whole show because I always assumed nobody was going to show up and nobody was going to ask a question.
Speaker AAnd it is a completely different skill set because if you are letting people on, like I actually have a link where people can join the video.
Speaker AIt could be somebody looking to prank me.
Speaker AAnd that's happened a time or two, not a lot But, Donna, maybe once a year somebody will come in and one guy just came in and hit a bong and blew a bunch of smoke into the screen.
Speaker AYou know, I did have somebody do some nudity that I had to cut out.
Speaker ASo it's, you know, there's always those pranksters if you don't have somebody screening your call.
Speaker AAnd I think ev mooks, you can do that.
Speaker AIt's kind of tricky again, when you're doing live.
Speaker APlus, as you think about this, when you're screening your call, you kind of need somebody to do that for you because, well, you're busy doing the show.
Speaker ASo it is a different skill set.
Speaker AAnd in the event you let somebody on live with you, you have to be ready to just kick them out or just interrupt them and go, hey, thanks so much for coming in.
Speaker AThanks for the question.
Speaker AAnd then, boom, you're gone.
Speaker AAnd this there's a great book called Beyond Powerful Radio.
Speaker AValerie Geller talks about this because some people just want to get on and then never want to get off.
Speaker AAnd so they'll be like, ah, the quarterback is hack.
Speaker AWe should have never got him.
Speaker AAnd then you ask him another question.
Speaker AThey're like, ah, that guy is no good.
Speaker AAnd you're like, okay, that guy has one point.
Speaker AHe's made his point.
Speaker AIt's time to get him off the show.
Speaker ASo it's kind of expensive.
Speaker AIt's a whole other learning curve.
Speaker AIt is a lot of fun.
Speaker AThat's the.
Speaker AWhat's the positive side of doing a live show?
Speaker AIs the fact that I can get instant feedback.
Speaker ANow, I'm lucky enough, I get about 30 people showing up live, so that's a full classroom.
Speaker AAnd if I want to ask them a question, I can get instant feedback.
Speaker ASo it is a lot of fun once you do it long enough.
Speaker AAnd you have to promote all the time.
Speaker AYou heard me today.
Speaker AEvery Saturday, 10:30.
Speaker ANoticed I had an easy to get to link askthepodcastcoach.com live and it takes a while.
Speaker ASo it's a lot of work like everything else.
Speaker ABut if you put the time in, it can be a lot of fun.
Speaker ABut that's how I do ask the podcast coach every Saturday.
Speaker ASo thanks for the question.
Speaker AAnd if you're thinking, Dave, I live in a different part of the world or whatever, I can't get up at 10:30 in the morning to check out your show.
Speaker AJust go over to podcastconsultant.com voicemail and you can leave your question there.
Speaker AI'll answer it here.
Speaker AAnd I'LL probably use it on Ask the Podcast Coach, because if you're new to the show, I've been helping podcasters for 20 years.
