Let AI Do What You Can't
I spent some time the other night updating some show notes that AI generated. There were at least seven words that not only would I never use, some of them I didn't even know what they were.
I know many people will blame the prompt. Learning to prompt takes time, and updating content that isn't even close to sounding like you also takes time. So with this in mind I ask,
"Is AI really saving us time?"
It surely does when it generates images for me as I am very much a "stick figure theater" kind of artist. But I've been typing since I was in middle school, and I have a brain. So I don't need artificial intelligence, I have actual intelligence.
So the text you are reading right now came from my brian, and is now going to you. Stevie Ray Vaughn called this "Soul to Soul." For me, having ai right a few paragraphs for show notes makes no sense when I can do it better, and in the same amount of time (I'm at 19:31 for recording, editing, creating an image and now writing show notes)
So let AI do the things you can't, and consider doing the things you can so you don't have to worry about it sounding like you. It will, because YOU did it.

Speaker AAI artificial intelligence is a great tool.
Speaker AI've seen it make some amazing images.
Speaker AI've seen it do some amazing, like I'll write a blog post and say, make it better.
Speaker ABut there are some times when I think it actually slows us down because one of the things that happens, and I just did one last night where I let AI come up with show notes.
Speaker AAnd this is supposed to be trying to sound like me.
Speaker AAnd I'm here to tell you, there were at least seven words that I don't even know the meanings of.
Speaker AAnd I would never ever say, period.
Speaker AAnd so consequently, I have to go through and read the entire thing.
Speaker AAnd then when I find something and I go, yeah, I'd never say that.
Speaker AOr it's just blatantly wrong.
Speaker CAnd.
Speaker AAnd I thought about it.
Speaker ASo I started a clock, I use a thing called clockify.
Speaker AAnd in the end I was like, this isn't really saving me a whole lot of time.
Speaker AAnd the other thing is, it doesn't really sound like me.
Speaker AIt doesn't sound horrible, doesn't sound like it was AI but for me, AI always gives me that 10,000 foot overview.
Speaker ADoesn't really give you any details, doesn't share any stories.
Speaker ADoesn't it just.
Speaker AIt is, it's, it's a C, said the old teacher.
Speaker ARight?
Speaker AIt's a C grade, nothing really amazing.
Speaker AAnd so I think going forward, I'm going to start writing my own show notes because I think in the end, if I look at the time it takes me to tweak something to not make me look stupid, and I don't think it sounds like me versus just typing it out.
Speaker ABecause here's the thing, I have a brain, so I don't need artificial intelligence.
Speaker AI actually have real intelligence.
Speaker AAnd I've been typing since I was in the seventh grade.
Speaker ANow, I'm not a whiz at that.
Speaker AI do occasionally have the typo, but I'm not sure it's an efficient use of my time.
Speaker ANow, there are times when I will let you, you know, it depends, as always with podcasting, but I think when it comes to My show notes, I think I'm done with that because I'm just finding that it just doesn't sound like me.
Speaker AAnd I think one of the things that Google I know for a fact is looking for is authenticity.
Speaker AAnd they want your expertise and they want your stories, and right now, AI doesn't give that.
Speaker CAnd.
Speaker AAnd rather than have me inject my stories and my expertise into this somewhat meh kind of output from AI, I'm just like.
Speaker AAnd even if it takes longer, I think in the long run, letting you be you when it comes to show notes.
Speaker ANow, I will say again, I've seen it make some amazing graphics.
Speaker AI've seen it make videos.
Speaker AI've seen him make all sorts of stuff.
Speaker AAnd those are things I can't do.
Speaker ASo I think the lesson here is let AI do the things that you don't do well.
Speaker AAnd for me, I've been writing since I was in the sixth grade.
Speaker AAnd over the years, I was the editor of the student newsletter at my college.
Speaker AI was writing articles, all sorts of stuff.
Speaker ASo I've always.
Speaker ABefore I was a podcaster, I was a writer.
Speaker AAnd that is something that I don't have a problem with.
Speaker ANow you might be going, dave, I hunt and peck when I type.
Speaker AThis is an amazing thing.
Speaker AWhen I use AI, that's great.
Speaker AAnd that's my point.
Speaker ALet AI do the things that you can't.
Speaker AAnd then anything you can do that way, it's you.
Speaker AAnd I just this last night, like I said, I was working on this episode and I was like, these show notes are horrible now.
Speaker AThey weren't wrong.
Speaker AIt just did not sound like me at all.
Speaker AAnd it wasn't the prompt.
Speaker AIt wasn't.
Speaker AIt was just like, no, this is, again, it's artificial intelligence.
Speaker AAnd all a large language model is doing.
Speaker AAnd that's what the.
Speaker AThe technology under AI is, is.
Speaker AIt's guessing what you want the next word to be it.
Speaker AAnd it does a really good job at that.
Speaker ABut in terms of guessing the word that I would use, no, not so much.
Speaker AAnd I realize, I understand that, hey, this is the worst it's going to get, and that's amazing.
Speaker ABut right now I'm like, I think I can write better show notes, and it's not going to take me a whole lot more time.
Speaker AIn fact, in some cases, it might actually save me some time.
