Stop Researching and Start Recording!
First up, let's talk about the wild ride of launching a podcast. It's like trying to throw a birthday party and making sure every single balloon is inflated to perfection. Spoiler alert: it’s impossible. Our main speaker, Dave, dives headfirst into the chaotic world of podcasting, where he points out that there’s never a perfect time to hit that record button. Seriously, if you're waiting for the planets to align or for your cat to give you the nod of approval, you might be waiting forever. Instead of obsessing over SEO and storytelling like it’s a PhD thesis, just grab that mic and start chatting! Trust me, your first episode will probably make you cringe later on, but that’s part of the journey. And hey, if you're gonna mess up, might as well do it while having fun, right?
Takeaways:
- Launching a podcast is like having a baby: there's never a perfect time, so just go for it!
- Researching SEO and storytelling can easily turn into procrastination, so stop buffering and hit record!
- Your podcast is a recipe, not a statue—it's all about experimenting and adjusting as you go!
- If you're waiting for perfection, you might just be overthinking everything—start recording already!
- Listening to your own content is hard, but if you can't handle it, maybe it's not ready for the world.
- Remember, aiming for perfection might just land you somewhere really good instead, so embrace the journey!

Speaker AHave you ever heard the phrase, there's no perfect time to have a baby?
Speaker AWell, there's also no perfect time to launch a podcast.
Speaker AAnd what I mean by this is I run into people from time to time, and they're researching SEO, and then they have to read 15 books on storytelling, and then they have to research on content creation, and then they have to do this, and then there just comes a time when you have to take the knowledge you have, because you probably have enough knowledge to press, record, and start.
Speaker AThat's a lot of what I do.
Speaker APeople want to keep learning and learning and learning.
Speaker ANow, why is that?
Speaker ABecause, well, they're afraid that it's not going to be any good.
Speaker AAnd that's why we say, before you launch, find some people who will tell you the truth and have them listen to your show.
Speaker ABut if we go back to.
Speaker AThere's never a perfect time.
Speaker AWhen I was a teenager, in my early 20s, I used to bowl on a couple leagues.
Speaker AI wasn't very good at it for as much bowling as I did, but I did bowl.
Speaker AAnd I mean, I had my own ball.
Speaker AI had the bag, I had the shoes.
Speaker AI even had my own lucky towel.
Speaker AAnd yet, when you would go to a league, before you would start, you got to throw a couple practice throws.
Speaker ANow, why is that?
Speaker AIt's the same pins, it's the same lane.
Speaker AThey're all exactly the same.
Speaker AOh, wait, no, they're not.
Speaker AThat's right.
Speaker AYou might have a little more oil on the lane.
Speaker AMaybe they're dry.
Speaker AWhatever it is, you have to realize that I'm throwing the ball the exact same way, but the way the lane reacts is different.
Speaker AIt's the same with podcasting.
Speaker AYou're putting out the same content with the same microphone, the same voice.
Speaker AAnd sometimes the audience reacts differently than you had expected.
Speaker AI always say your podcast is a recipe.
Speaker AIt's not a statue.
Speaker AAnd so if you're a person that has been studying SEO and storytelling and content creation and voice inflection, and you think you need a voice coach and a business coach and an SEO, I'm just here to say you might be overthinking this a bit, trying to get everything perfect before you leave.
Speaker AAnd it's not going to be perfect.
Speaker AYou ask any podcaster and they will cringe when they listen to episode one.
Speaker ANow, there are best practices that you can do.
Speaker AAnd that's where at the school of podcasting, we actually have a service where you can ask me to listen to your episode, or we're getting ready to launch listener Stories where we can have a bunch of people invite them over to come listen to your podcast.
Speaker AAnd this reminds me, when I was again a teenager, I'd been a guitar player a big chunk of my life, and I would write my own music and I would sing.
Speaker ANow I'm a much better guitar player than I am a singer, especially because I would write songs that were, well, way too high for me to sing, but I would sing them anyway.
Speaker AAnd when somebody would say, hey, I want to check out your new music, I would come in, I'd throw the cassette into the player and I would hit play and then I would leave.
Speaker AWhy?
Speaker ABecause I knew my singing wasn't great.
Speaker AI wasn't confident in the material.
Speaker AAnd if you're not confident to have sit in a room and listen to other people consume your content, then that's a red flag.
Speaker AYour content is not ready.
Speaker AThe beautiful thing about the school of podcasting is we will listen to your content and we will let you know what you're doing Right.
Speaker AAnd if there is something that needs a little tweaking, well, isn't the best time to tweak things before you go public?
Speaker ASo this is kind of a pre public service that we offer.
Speaker ABut realize if the goal is to make it perfect and you're just researching and researching, researching, there are times when you have to actually record something so people can tweak it and then you can get it even more perfect.
Speaker ABut realize, just like those bowling lanes, your audience is going to react a little different than you thought.
Speaker ASo you're not going to have it perfect until it actually goes to your target audience and you can go through all those steps.
Speaker ABut in the end, if the goal is perfection, I always say if you aim at perfect and you miss, you land on really, really good.
Speaker ASo don't be afraid to start.
Speaker AThat's what I do.
