The Pocket-Sized Podcasting Revolution: Gear Up and Go!
Podcast Movement is just around the corner, and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably freaking out a little. I mean, who doesn’t love the thrill of trying to network while simultaneously figuring out how to use your recording gear? This episode is a deep dive into the chaos of recording on the go. I’ve had my fair share of gear fails, and trust me, they’re the stuff of legend. From microphones that promise the world but leave you questioning your sanity to recorders so tiny you need a microscope to see the screen, I’ve experienced it all. And spoiler alert: it’s not glamorous.
I’m also sharing my latest find, the Hollyland Lark M2S combo. This little piece of magic fits in your pocket and makes recording on the fly a breeze. It’s perfect for those unexpected moments when you bump into someone you want to interview. And let’s be real, we all know how important it is to keep things short and sweet at events.
Long interviews? Nah, thanks. People are there to network, not to sit through a podcast marathon. I’ll give you the ins and outs of how to snag quick audio bits that won’t annoy your new friends at the conference.
Finally, I’ll stress the importance of practicing like it’s your job. I’ve been that person fumbling with buttons and praying the mic is on. Not a good look, right? So, as we gear up for Podcast Movement, let’s make sure we’re ready to roll when the moment strikes. You’ll leave this episode armed with the knowledge to make the most of every recording opportunity that comes your way. Let’s do this!
Takeaways:
- Practice, practice, practice! You never know when you'll need to record something awesome.
- If you're heading to events, keep your interviews short, they're all about networking, not long chats.
- Investing in portable gear like the Hollyland Lark M2S can save you from recording disasters.
- Don't be that person fumbling with equipment! Be ready to hit record at a moment's notice.
- Avoid giant echo chambers when recording on the road; find a cozy spot instead.
- Remember, everyone at conferences wants to mingle, so respect their time and keep it chill.

I'm going to a big podcast conference next week, Podcast Movement.
Speaker AAnd I've got some tips if you want to record on the road.
Speaker AWelcome to your podcast consultant.
Speaker ASmall lessons with big value.
Speaker AWith more than a decade of experience and millions of downloads, this hall of fame podcaster is a featured speaker, author and mentor to thousands.
Speaker ANow he wants to work with you.
Speaker AHe's your podcast consultant, Dave Jackson.
Speaker ASo I'm going to Podcast Movement next week.
Speaker AIf you are going to be there.
Speaker AI will be at either.
Speaker AI'm going very dyslexic here.
Speaker AI'm either at booth 301 or 310, manning the pod page booth.
Speaker AAnd so stop by and say hi.
Speaker ABut I always.
Speaker AOver the years I've bought many things, thinking I can record quick snippets.
Speaker ASo I bought the rode has a microphone that has a recorder built into it.
Speaker ASuper simple, right?
Speaker APull it out, hit record, you're good to go.
Speaker AWell, and it's not a deal breaker.
Speaker AIt just drove me nuts that I could not hear what I was recording.
Speaker AThere's no headphones for that.
Speaker AThen I had a Tascam recorder that would plug into the bottom of whatever microphone you wanted to use.
Speaker AExcept the screen was about the size of your pinky finger, it was really tiny and it was backlit and I could never really tell what was going on.
Speaker ASo that was the end of this one.
Speaker AAnd I have found this one.
Speaker AIt is the Hollyland Lark M2S combo.
Speaker AYeah, say that three times fast.
Speaker AAnd the only reason I bought this is because they were at Podcast Movement Evolutions and they were giving these away and my friend got one.
Speaker AAnd so we were playing with it and recording and I was like, okay, lavalier microphone is never gonna sound as good as a dynamic.
Speaker ABut I was amazed at how well this sounded.
Speaker AAnd of course, with a little post production you'll be good to go.
Speaker ABut the other thing I liked about it is you have two very small microphones that you can clip to your shirt and then you can either have it go directly into your phone, so you can buy one for Android or one for Apple.
Speaker AAnd then it also has this other receiver that could go into your camera, or you could have that same receiver go into your phone.
Speaker AOr.
Speaker ABut wait, there's more.
Speaker AYou could even have it go into both at the same time.
Speaker AAnd so I like the fact I take the receiver and I have a long USB C to USB C that goes right into the bottom of my phone.
Speaker AI don't have to take the phone out of the case or Anything like that.
Speaker AAnd are you ready for this?
Speaker AIt's $149.
Speaker ASo the one thing that I'm doing, because I have basically a week until I'll be there.
Speaker ACouple quick tips.
Speaker ANumber one, I don't want to do long interviews unless it's under a special circumstance.
Speaker AWhy?
Speaker ABecause people are at these events to network and you don't want to pull them away for an hour to do an interview.
Speaker ASo any kind of recording I'm doing, I have one segment of my show called the Last Five and Five, which was tell us about the last five podcasts you listened to and tell us a little bit about it, as well as, you know, your elevator pitch for your show.
Speaker AHaven't had one of those in a while.
Speaker ASo if you feel like doing one of those.
Speaker AIt is exactly what I just said.
Speaker ATell me about the last five podcasts you listened to.
Speaker AAnd the idea is you do it under five minutes.
Speaker ASo I might do some of those, I might get some IDs where people just go, hey, it's Joe Schmo.
Speaker AAnd you're listening to the school of podcasting, that kind of thing.
Speaker ABecause the idea is, and that's what I'm doing right now is I'm starting to practice with this equipment because number one, it fits in your pocket.
Speaker AAnd so if something comes up and you're like, hey, can we record a quick two question interview?
Speaker AYou just clip it on the person, fire up your phone, you hit record.
Speaker AIn this case, they have a software for this that actually removes some sound from the back end, which could be cool if you're in a noisy hallway.
Speaker AI think in general, I would leave the noise in there and pull the noise out in post because I have tools on my PC to do that much better than probably what's built in.
Speaker ABut the bottom line is I want to be able to go, ooh, can we record a quick snippet and be able to clip, clip, record, go.
Speaker ANot, oh, hold on, I got to do this.
Speaker AWait, what's the level?
Speaker AOh, I think the button's over here.
Speaker ANo, no, I have to practice.
Speaker ASo I'm ready to go.
Speaker ASo that's something.
Speaker AIf you're going to be recording on the road, what you want to do is practice, practice, practice.
Speaker ASo then when it comes time and you are in front of the person that you thought you could never interview, then they just said, yeah, I got five minutes, clip, clip, record, go.
Speaker AAnd you're good to go.
Speaker ABecause I've been there.
Speaker ALike, wait, I think it's this Button.
Speaker AWait, no, wait.
Speaker AOh, is the red light on?
Speaker ANo, that's not a good first impression.
Speaker AAnd you look stupid and it creates a barrier.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker ASomething that you have to go, I'm not really positive I know how to do this yet.
Speaker AWell, practice like anything else.
Speaker AAnd that way when the moment comes up and you want to do a quick recording or a long recording, like I said, you might have, somebody goes, yeah, we could do an interview right now the bad news is I've done this twice.
Speaker AYou find an empty room and all the empty rooms if you're at an event are these big, giant rooms and there's nobody in it.
Speaker ASo it's a giant echo chamber.
Speaker AAnd then you're like, oh, well, you could just go to your hotel room.
Speaker AI, as a middle aged man, am not going into my bedroom.
Speaker AMy bedroom.
Speaker AWell, basically it's what it is with another human being, especially if it's female.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ANo, no, no, no, no.
Speaker ASo unless I'm bringing somebody else, if I'm bringing a third person with me.
Speaker AYeah, maybe.
Speaker ABut even again, you're pulling them away from the networking.
Speaker ASo, you know, there are instances where you don't care and they don't care and holy cow, I can't believe I can talk to this person.
Speaker AThen that's fine, but let them bring it up.
Speaker AI would not say, hey, do you got a second to do a quick, you know, 90 minute interview?
Speaker ANo, they're not going to go for that.
Speaker AThey spend a lot of money on a hotel and plane tickets.
Speaker AThey want to network with as many people as they can.
Speaker ASo don't try to monopolize their time.
Speaker AIf you have any questions, as always, you can go out to the website for this show, podcastconsultant.com you can go out there and follow and get all the back episodes or there's a button out there where you can join the school of podcast and use the coupon code listnr when you sign up for either a monthly, quarterly or yearly subscription.
