Why Your Podcast Website is a Ghost Town: The Truth Hurts

Let's dig into the whirlwind of podcasting realities where we chat about how many podcasters seem to think that just slapping a website together is like waving a magic wand for traffic.

The problem is - it’s not.

I mean, if only it were that easy, right? Just like the classic movie 'Field of Dreams' where they thought building the field would bring the players, our podcasters think that creating a website will bring in the listeners.

But no one’s showing up for the party unless you have a plan! So, in this gem of an episode, I break down the nitty-gritty of why traffic doesn’t just magically appear and what you can do to change that sad little narrative. We talk about organic search, SEO, social media engagement, and the importance of having a solid content strategy.

Seriously, your site should be the hub of your podcast universe, not just a lonely outpost in the middle of nowhere. Let’s get those listeners clicking and engaging, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be one of those success stories we all love to hear about!

Takeaways:

  • Just having a website for your podcast won’t magically bring traffic; it’s like expecting pizza to show up just because you ordered it.
  • Podcasters often think traffic will come from their website alone, but it’s really a game of SEO and marketing, folks!
  • To boost your website traffic, focus on organic search and engage on social media—shocking, I know!
  • You need a strategy for your show notes; they shouldn’t read like a robot wrote them, or Google will just yawn.
  • Creating valuable content is key; if your show notes make people feel like they’re studying for a test, you’re doing it right!
  • Don't forget, Google loves EAT: Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness—because who doesn’t want to be the cool kid on the block?

Speaker A

As I work for a company that builds websites for podcasters, I'm always amazed when I find out the reason they leave is because they weren't getting any traffic.

Speaker B

Welcome to youo Podcast Consultant.

Speaker B

Small Lessons with Big Value.

Speaker B

With more than a decade of experience and millions of downloads, this hall of fame podcaster is a featured speaker, author and mentor to thousands.

Speaker B

Now he wants to work with you.

Speaker B

He's your podcast consultant.

Speaker A

Dave Jackson at PodPage.

Speaker A

I hear this a lot where I am the head of podcasting over there, and occasionally we'll have somebody leave and I'll be like, well, why did you leave?

Speaker A

And their answer way too often is, well, I'm not getting the traffic I thought I was going to get by having a website.

Speaker A

And so it's just something I see on a regular basis where podcasters think just having a website is going to magically bring them traffic.

Speaker A

And so that's just not the case.

Speaker A

You know, if you've ever seen the old movie Field of Dreams, this isn't one of those where if you build it, they will come.

Speaker A

There are some things that bring traffic to your website.

Speaker A

The first one is organic search, better known as Google and Bing and things like that.

Speaker A

And this is where you have found what keywords are, you know, will bring traffic, but there's not too much competition.

Speaker A

And then you use those on your website.

Speaker A

That's organic search.

Speaker A

And then there's social media engagement where you're engaging with your target audience and occasionally pointing them back to your website.

Speaker A

And then there are people like, well, I wish I had a team of people that could help me promote this.

Speaker A

Well, you have one of those, it's called your audience.

Speaker A

Everything you have, your business cards, your email signature, everything should point back to your website.

Speaker A

That is your hub, that's your main home base.

Speaker A

Everything social, etcetera, Branches off from your website.

Speaker A

But here's the thing.

Speaker A

So many people like, oh, I got this handled.

Speaker A

I'm using, you know, AI to write a bunch of stuff and it expands my show notes.

Speaker A

Well, Google doesn't want just words.

Speaker A

They want good words.

Speaker A

And they've introduced this amazing concept.

Speaker A

It's called eat.

Speaker A

And you'll hear this and you'll kind of identify.

Speaker A

This is the opposite of AI.

Speaker A

EEAT stands for experience.

Speaker A

So that's the firsthand knowledge about your topic that you are talking about you, a person firsthand, it's the expertise.

Speaker A

So this shows that you have a deep understanding of your subject.

Speaker A

Authoritativeness, that's the a.

Speaker A

So that's just your reputation over Time.

Speaker A

And so over months as you do this and you're sharing your personal stories and your personal expertise, that's going to build your authoritativeness.

Speaker A

And then trustworthiness means it's reliable.

Speaker A

So you are on a regular basis putting out great content.

Speaker A

It's safe content.

Speaker A

And the other thing you want to make sure of, make sure you have contact information because it's a big, giant red flag when Google goes, wait, there's no way to contact this person because gosh, who would do that?

Speaker A

Oh, that's right, a robot.

Speaker A

Yeah, Good friends, you know, chatgpt, AI.

Speaker A

And so what most podcasters miss is a blog.

Speaker A

And not just any blog, but a strategic, you know, value packed resource.

Speaker A

Your show notes shouldn't just be some raw transcript because again, we want good words and we don't write like we talk and we don't talk like we write.

Speaker A

They should be compelling.

Speaker A

It should be a shareable piece of content.

Speaker A

My friend Pat Flynn, one time I was talking with him and he said he makes his show notes so detailed, they look like you're trying to pass a test on that subject.

Speaker A

That's a resource, you know, that's how you create clickable, linkable, valuable content.

Speaker A

And so keep that in mind if you want to transform your podcast websites.

Speaker A

Here's some things you need to do.

Speaker A

Create meaningful, remarkable content.

Speaker A

And again, if you go to podcastconsultant.com growth, you can get my checklist that you can use on your episodes to go, hey, am I delivering valuable content you want to update on a regular basis?

Speaker A

You know, so the one person was like, well, I do things monthly.

Speaker A

Yeah, that's probably not enough to really compete with other people in your genre and understanding SEO.

Speaker A

So using tools like ubersuggest and there are a ton of those things that allow you to figure out what are people searching for and then which one of those will actually bring me traffic but not be so competitive that I can't rank.

Speaker A

And I know people are like, man, I just want to do a podcast.

Speaker A

Well, it's the same thing if you have a YouTube channel, you have to study the algorithm to understand how YouTube works.

Speaker A

Well, SEO is just how to do this with a website and then engage your audience.

Speaker A

So with PodPage, you've got built in voicemail, you've got a contact page.

Speaker A

Anytime anyone interacts with you, be sure to answer those emails, those voicemails do all that.

Speaker A

And again, be sure to tell your unique stories because AI doesn't have that.

Speaker A

Now if you need help, you know where to find me, go over to schoolofpodcasting.com where we offer monthly, quarterly and yearly subscriptions with a not 7, not 14, a 30 day money back guarantee.

Speaker A

And just remember, look, podcasting sounds simple and it is, but it's not easy.

Speaker A

And so I can't wait to help make your podcast just extraordinary so that it becomes the podcast in your genre.

Speaker A

I'm Dave Jackson.

Speaker A

I help podcasters.

Speaker A

It's what I do.

Speaker A

And I can't wait to see what we're going to do together because I want to be your podcast consultant.
