Why Your Podcast Website is a Ghost Town: The Truth Hurts
Let's dig into the whirlwind of podcasting realities where we chat about how many podcasters seem to think that just slapping a website together is like waving a magic wand for traffic.
The problem is - it’s not.
I mean, if only it were that easy, right? Just like the classic movie 'Field of Dreams' where they thought building the field would bring the players, our podcasters think that creating a website will bring in the listeners.
But no one’s showing up for the party unless you have a plan! So, in this gem of an episode, I break down the nitty-gritty of why traffic doesn’t just magically appear and what you can do to change that sad little narrative. We talk about organic search, SEO, social media engagement, and the importance of having a solid content strategy.
Seriously, your site should be the hub of your podcast universe, not just a lonely outpost in the middle of nowhere. Let’s get those listeners clicking and engaging, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be one of those success stories we all love to hear about!
Takeaways:
- Just having a website for your podcast won’t magically bring traffic; it’s like expecting pizza to show up just because you ordered it.
- Podcasters often think traffic will come from their website alone, but it’s really a game of SEO and marketing, folks!
- To boost your website traffic, focus on organic search and engage on social media—shocking, I know!
- You need a strategy for your show notes; they shouldn’t read like a robot wrote them, or Google will just yawn.
- Creating valuable content is key; if your show notes make people feel like they’re studying for a test, you’re doing it right!
- Don't forget, Google loves EAT: Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness—because who doesn’t want to be the cool kid on the block?

As I work for a company that builds websites for podcasters, I'm always amazed when I find out the reason they leave is because they weren't getting any traffic.

Speaker ADave Jackson at PodPage.
Speaker AI hear this a lot where I am the head of podcasting over there, and occasionally we'll have somebody leave and I'll be like, well, why did you leave?
Speaker AAnd their answer way too often is, well, I'm not getting the traffic I thought I was going to get by having a website.
Speaker AAnd so it's just something I see on a regular basis where podcasters think just having a website is going to magically bring them traffic.
Speaker AAnd so that's just not the case.
Speaker AYou know, if you've ever seen the old movie Field of Dreams, this isn't one of those where if you build it, they will come.
Speaker AThere are some things that bring traffic to your website.
Speaker AThe first one is organic search, better known as Google and Bing and things like that.
Speaker AAnd this is where you have found what keywords are, you know, will bring traffic, but there's not too much competition.
Speaker AAnd then you use those on your website.
Speaker AThat's organic search.
Speaker AAnd then there's social media engagement where you're engaging with your target audience and occasionally pointing them back to your website.
Speaker AAnd then there are people like, well, I wish I had a team of people that could help me promote this.
Speaker AWell, you have one of those, it's called your audience.
Speaker AEverything you have, your business cards, your email signature, everything should point back to your website.
Speaker AThat is your hub, that's your main home base.
Speaker AEverything social, etcetera, Branches off from your website.
Speaker ABut here's the thing.
Speaker ASo many people like, oh, I got this handled.
Speaker AI'm using, you know, AI to write a bunch of stuff and it expands my show notes.
Speaker AWell, Google doesn't want just words.
Speaker AThey want good words.
Speaker AAnd they've introduced this amazing concept.
Speaker AIt's called eat.
Speaker AAnd you'll hear this and you'll kind of identify.
Speaker AThis is the opposite of AI.
Speaker AEEAT stands for experience.
Speaker ASo that's the firsthand knowledge about your topic that you are talking about you, a person firsthand, it's the expertise.
Speaker ASo this shows that you have a deep understanding of your subject.
Speaker AAuthoritativeness, that's the a.
Speaker ASo that's just your reputation over Time.
Speaker AAnd so over months as you do this and you're sharing your personal stories and your personal expertise, that's going to build your authoritativeness.
Speaker AAnd then trustworthiness means it's reliable.
Speaker ASo you are on a regular basis putting out great content.
Speaker AIt's safe content.
Speaker AAnd the other thing you want to make sure of, make sure you have contact information because it's a big, giant red flag when Google goes, wait, there's no way to contact this person because gosh, who would do that?
Speaker AOh, that's right, a robot.
Speaker AYeah, Good friends, you know, chatgpt, AI.
Speaker AAnd so what most podcasters miss is a blog.
Speaker AAnd not just any blog, but a strategic, you know, value packed resource.
Speaker AYour show notes shouldn't just be some raw transcript because again, we want good words and we don't write like we talk and we don't talk like we write.
Speaker AThey should be compelling.
Speaker AIt should be a shareable piece of content.
Speaker AMy friend Pat Flynn, one time I was talking with him and he said he makes his show notes so detailed, they look like you're trying to pass a test on that subject.
Speaker AThat's a resource, you know, that's how you create clickable, linkable, valuable content.
Speaker AAnd so keep that in mind if you want to transform your podcast websites.
Speaker AHere's some things you need to do.
Speaker ACreate meaningful, remarkable content.
Speaker AAnd again, if you go to podcastconsultant.com growth, you can get my checklist that you can use on your episodes to go, hey, am I delivering valuable content you want to update on a regular basis?
Speaker AYou know, so the one person was like, well, I do things monthly.
Speaker AYeah, that's probably not enough to really compete with other people in your genre and understanding SEO.
Speaker ASo using tools like ubersuggest and there are a ton of those things that allow you to figure out what are people searching for and then which one of those will actually bring me traffic but not be so competitive that I can't rank.
Speaker AAnd I know people are like, man, I just want to do a podcast.
Speaker AWell, it's the same thing if you have a YouTube channel, you have to study the algorithm to understand how YouTube works.
Speaker AWell, SEO is just how to do this with a website and then engage your audience.
Speaker ASo with PodPage, you've got built in voicemail, you've got a contact page.
Speaker AAnytime anyone interacts with you, be sure to answer those emails, those voicemails do all that.
Speaker AAnd again, be sure to tell your unique stories because AI doesn't have that.
Speaker ANow if you need help, you know where to find me, go over to schoolofpodcasting.com where we offer monthly, quarterly and yearly subscriptions with a not 7, not 14, a 30 day money back guarantee.
Speaker AAnd just remember, look, podcasting sounds simple and it is, but it's not easy.
Speaker AAnd so I can't wait to help make your podcast just extraordinary so that it becomes the podcast in your genre.
