What Day Should I Publish My Podcast?

We're diving into the age-old question that plagues all budding podcasters: when should I drop my episodes? I mean, it’s not like we’re all sitting around waiting for the next serial to drop, right?

Shoot For the Empty Day of the Week Strategy

So, here’s the scoop: you could play the spreadsheet game, tracking when your competition releases their episodes. Picture it: you’ve got a spreadsheet with a bunch of podcast names and dates. You notice that Wednesdays are as empty as my fridge on a Sunday night, so why not slide in and claim that day?

How Many Shows Do You Listen to on THE DAY it Releases?

But let’s be real here—does it even really matter? Most of us listen to shows whenever we feel like it, not at the crack of dawn on release day. It’s not like we’re tuning in live like it’s a radio show or something.

Consistency in Schedule and VALUE

So, consistency is key, folks. Pick a day that works for you and stick with it. If it’s Thursday, then it’s Thursday. If you want to release on Wednesday but your life screams Thursday, record a few episodes in advance. The world won’t end if you miss a ‘prime’ day. So, in the end, just do what works for you, and let your audience find you.

Takeaways:

  • So, when should you launch your podcast? Honestly, it doesn't really matter all that much.
  • Consistency is key, folks. Pick a day and stick to it like glue, alright?
  • Wednesdays are golden! Everyone's back in the groove and looking for fresh content.
  • Check out your competition, find the gaps, and seize the day—like a podcast ninja!
  • Recording episodes ahead of time is a smart move. Get that backlog going, my friend.
  • In the end, do what fits your life best. Your podcast should suit you, not the other way around.

Speaker A

I'm getting ready to launch a podcast, and I'm not sure what day I should publish my weekly show.

Speaker A

Does it matter?

Speaker A

Well, let's talk about it.

Speaker B

Welcome to your podcast consultant.

Speaker B

Now he wants to work with you.

Speaker B

He's your podcast consultant, Dave Jackson.

Speaker A

There are a couple of ways to look at this answer, and that is, of course, when do I publish my weekly show?

Speaker A

One strategy is to go look at all of your competition, get yourself a spreadsheet, and in that first column put the name of the show, and then the next columns are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and note what day your competition releases.

Speaker A

And then pick the day that is the least amount of podcasts.

Speaker A

So let's say you've got four people and one is on Monday, one is on Tuesday, one is on Thursday, one is on Friday.

Speaker A

Well, nobody's on Wednesday, so it might make more sense for you to release on a Wednesday.

Speaker A

My answer?

Speaker A

I'll tell you that, and then I'll tell you what the Internet said.

Speaker A

My answer is it doesn't really matter because almost all of the podcasts, this is a survey of one here that I listen to, are days old.

Speaker A

I rarely listen to a show on the day that it was released.

Speaker A

I think I have two shows that I do this with, and I listen to multiple, multiple, multiple shows.

Speaker A

So it's not like it's radio, where, oh my gosh, it's almost 9 o', clock, it's time for the Dave Show.

Speaker A

No, that's just not happening.

Speaker A

And in that essence, I don't think it really matters.

Speaker A

What does matter in the long run is you are consistent in publishing.

Speaker A

I've said that before.

Speaker A

And consistent in delivering value.

Speaker A

And so what you want to look at again is your life.

Speaker A

Can I publish every Wednesday?

Speaker A

Can I publish every Thursday?

Speaker A

Whatever day is going to work best for you, the person, not you, the show.

Speaker A

Pick that day.

Speaker A

That's really the key.

Speaker A

Now, when I went to the Internet, it said something that I already knew, and that is that Monday is pretty busy.

Speaker A

A lot of people, you're getting back to work.

Speaker A

And because it's kind of seen as the beginning of the week, a lot of people publish on Monday.

Speaker A

They say really the better time is during the middle of the week, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with Wednesday morning being one that seems to really be the default choice.

Speaker A

And the reason for that is people are back in their work.

Speaker A

Routine.

Speaker A

They're not kind of rusty like they are on Monday, they're not kind of distracted like they are on Friday, maybe the middle of the week.

Speaker A

But in the end, it's the day that you can do consistently.

Speaker A

So keep that in mind.

Speaker A

And sometimes if you're like, well, I really want to be on Wednesday, but if I was doing it based on my life, then it would be Thursday.

Speaker A

Well, then one way to do that.

Speaker A

If you really want to be on Wednesday or whatever day you pick, record four or five episodes ahead of time and as always, get feedback on those if you're getting ready to launch.

Speaker A

And that way you could do it on Wednesday and then you continue to record episodes so that you have a bunch on deck in the can, as some say.

Speaker A

In the end, I don't think it makes a ton of difference.

Speaker A

But I like the idea of publishing on a day when other shows are not, because in theory that audience is going to be looking for something, assuming they don't have more than one podcast to listen to.

Speaker A

So in the end, do what works best for you and what works best for the audience.

Speaker A

See if you can come up with a compromise.

Speaker A

And that's the day you pick if you need more help with your podcast.

Speaker A

I've been helping podcasters for over 20 years and I would love to see what we can do together.
