Staring at Stats Won't Boost Your Podcast—Trust Me!
Stop Obsessing Over Your Downloads
Obsessing over your downloads isn’t gonna magically make them grow, folks. Trust me, I’ve been there, and it’s a wild ride of checking stats every five seconds like it’s some sort of lottery. We look into why fixating on those numbers is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. It’s all about the real connections we make and the value we bring, not just the digits on a dashboard.
So, let’s chat about how to actually measure success in ways that matter and keep our podcasting dreams alive without going bonkers over the numbers. New podcasters often find themselves spiraling into the black hole of statistics, obsessively tracking their downloads like it's the holy grail of success. I mean, c'mon, we’ve all been there, right? You release a couple of episodes, and next thing you know, you’re refreshing your stats page like it’s a lottery results site. But here’s the thing: all that staring at numbers won’t magically make them grow. In this episode, we dive into this common pitfall, dissecting the absurdity of letting download counts dictate our moods and self-worth.
It’s not about the numbers; it’s about the impact.
I share stories of podcasters who’ve hit the download wall but found fulfillment through audience engagement instead. Trust me, those heartfelt emails and community interactions are way more rewarding than any download spike could ever be. Let’s face it – we’re not running a fast-food joint here. McDonald’s has it all measured out, but in the world of podcasting, consistency and quality trump the obsessive number crunching.
Predicting Success is Not Easy
I talk about how, sometimes, the episodes we think will flop resonate deeply, while others we’re sure will be hits fall flat. The unpredictability of audience reactions is part of the charm, and embracing that chaos can be liberating. Plus, we tackle the importance of focusing on relationships with our listeners rather than just chasing that elusive download milestone.
One Piece of the Podcasting Puzzle
In the end, download numbers are just one piece of the puzzle. We explore various ways to gauge success that don’t revolve around download stats: feedback, collaborations, and even the sheer joy of sharing your passion. So, if you’re new to this podcasting game, let’s ditch the download anxiety and start building genuine connections. Your show’s growth will follow, even if the numbers take a back seat for a while.
Takeaways:
- Staring at your podcast stats every day won't magically boost your downloads, trust me.
- When you obsess over numbers, you can miss out on the real impact you're making.
- Your podcast's success isn't just about downloads; feedback and engagement are crucial too.
- Focus on creating good content rather than just chasing the download numbers.
- Building a community and connecting with your audience is way more valuable than stats.
- Remember, you're not McDonald's; entertainment is unpredictable, so embrace the chaos.

Speaker BWelcome to your podcast consultant.

Speaker BWith more than a decade of experience and millions of downloads, this hall of fame podcaster is a featured speaker, author, and mentor to thousands.
Speaker BNow he wants to work with you, your podcast consultant, Dave Jackson.
Speaker ASo I'm on Facebook and somebody says, I need some advice.
Speaker APlease.
Speaker AHas anyone seen a sudden drop in downloads?
Speaker AI've been tracking ours every week, and for months, we Rarely went below 50 downloads a week.
Speaker ASome weeks we even hit 100 plus, but for the last four weeks, it's been dropping 33, 25, 22, 11.
Speaker AWe still publish a new episode every week.
Speaker AWe still publish blogs for every episode with a call to action to listen.
Speaker AWe still send weekly email campaigns.
Speaker AI'm starting to wonder if we're missing something.
Speaker ACould this be an SEO issue?
Speaker AOr is there something else I should be checking?
Speaker AIf you've gone through this before, I really appreciate hearing what caused it and how you fixed it.
Speaker AAll right, so here's my answer.
Speaker AHow much time are you spending tracking your stats?
Speaker AHow much time are you spending staring at the stats?
Speaker AIt really.
Speaker AI get it.
Speaker AYou're new, and we all do that.
Speaker AWe.
Speaker ABecause it.
Speaker AYou can see they even posted the spreadsheet where they went from 113 one week to 28 the next.
Speaker AThen they went to 108, and then they went to 61.
Speaker AYou're not McDonald's.
Speaker AAnd what I mean by that is McDonald's has everything absolutely measured.
Speaker AThis must.
Speaker AKetchup, three pickles.
Speaker AYou know, the fries are cooked, X amount of minutes, everything.
Speaker ASo when you go from one McDonald's to the next, it's pretty consistent.
Speaker AAnd anything in entertainment is not.
Speaker AIf you look at your favorite actor or actress, they'll have three great movies, and then they don't.
Speaker ACase in point, Bruce Willis.
Speaker AYou know, and then every podcaster goes through this.
Speaker AAnd then the other thing that's really frustrating is you will put out an episode that you kind of go, hmm, should I even put this out?
Speaker AI'm not sure this is gonna work.
Speaker AI just did this.
Speaker AI did an episode about understanding rss, and I was like, wow, this is really nerdy.
Speaker AAnd I put it out, and I normally get maybe one email from somebody that says, that was really good.
Speaker AAnd so if you're looking for lots of feedback from your audience, at least in my travels of all the shows I do, you rarely get anybody that will email you or et cetera, et cetera.
Speaker ASo I put this thing out about RSS feeds and how, you know, here's why, you need to understand what they are.
Speaker AAnd people just shoot themselves in the foot because they don't understand the workflow of a podcast.
Speaker AI put that out and I was thinking, this is too nerdy.
Speaker ANobody's going to enjoy that.
Speaker AI got probably seven emails going.
Speaker AI thought I understood rss.
Speaker AI didn't.
Speaker AThank you so much.
Speaker AAnd so it's very hard to pick what's going to work and what's not.
Speaker AAnd then there are other times when you put things out and you're like, this is going to go gangbusters.
Speaker AEverybody should love this.
Speaker AAnd it's just crickets.
Speaker ASo if you think about it, if we go logically here, the better, you know, your audience, what they need, what they like, what they don't like, etc.
Speaker AThe better the content.
Speaker AThe better the content, the better the chance that they're going to tell a friend.
Speaker AAnd that is the one thing I don't hear enough of.
Speaker AI hear people ask for reviews, Please review us in Apple.
Speaker AIt helps us get found.
Speaker AI'm sorry, Apple has said.
Speaker ANo, it doesn't.
Speaker AIt is social proof.
Speaker AApple said that, not me.
Speaker AApple said, it is social proof.
Speaker AIt does not help you with the algorithm.
Speaker ASo I hear a lot of that.
Speaker AOr I'll hear people give 15 calls to action.
Speaker AHey, like me on Instagram, do this on TikTok, this and that, blah, blah, blah, follow me there.
Speaker AAnd you've given them way too many calls to action.
Speaker AI try.
Speaker AIt's hard to give one call to action.
Speaker AUsually it's find me at the school of podcasting.
Speaker ABut if you're not sure what to do and you're brand new, that should be slowly, specifically and concisely, hey, if you found value in this episode and you know somebody who needs to hear it, why not go to your phone, be a friend and share this episode with your friend and they're just going to think you're amazing for doing that.
Speaker AAnd I'm going to get a new listener.
Speaker AOr you could just send them to my website, podcastconsultant.com or obviously you would put in your website there.
Speaker ABut the thing that I see people do is they obsess over their stats and I get it.
Speaker AI did it too.
Speaker AWhen I first started, I. I can't tell you how many downloads this episode gets because I don't judge my success on downloads.
Speaker AThere are so many other ways it could be feedback.
Speaker ASo this could be anything, like email, voicemail, Comments, you know, active in.
Speaker AIf you have a group, maybe more people join the group.
Speaker AMaybe it's guest offers, collaborations.
Speaker AAll these things are ways that show you're impacting your audience.
Speaker AIt could be again, lead magnet signups on your email list, just the growth of your news list.
Speaker AMaybe it's affiliate links, maybe it's donations, maybe it's fun.
Speaker AYeah, there's a novel idea.
Speaker AMaybe you're getting paid in fun.
Speaker AThat is something.
Speaker AMaybe it's behavior change.
Speaker AI know in that episode, I'll put a link to it in the show notes.
Speaker AMy buddy Scott Johnson did an episode about somebody had donated their kidney and it saved someone's life.
Speaker AAnd because of that episode, multiple people have reached out to Scott to say, hey, I've set it up to donate my organs.
Speaker AI didn't realize what a great blessing that could be.
Speaker AAnd I have other people that are doing their podcast to leave a legacy to their children, their grandchildren and their great grandchildren that has nothing to do with downloads.
Speaker AAnd so many times we don't see these other ways that our show, our network, our confidence behind the mic is growing.
Speaker AAnd because we only look at downloads, we get downhearted and eventually we quit.
Speaker AThere are so many ways to measure your success that have nothing to do with downloads.
Speaker ANow, I'm not saying completely ignore them because it's interesting when you put out something that you think it's going to be great and you just get crickets.
Speaker AAnd then it's always a nice surprise when you put out something that you're like, I think this will work.
Speaker AAnd it just goes gangbusters.
Speaker ASo it's a gauge.
Speaker AIt is one way to measure success.
Speaker AIt is not the only way to to measure success.
Speaker AAnd when you're brand new to podcasting, you're going to be checking that dashboard every 10 minutes.
Speaker AOh my gosh, we're up to seven downloads and I get that.
Speaker AAnd that is totally normal.
Speaker AJust realize that staring at your stats does not make them grow.
Speaker AStaring and working with your audience does.
Speaker ANow, if you need help with this, come out and visit me at School of Podcasting.
